banksia house

sunrise beach, queensland, australia

Architecturally designed house for a couple to enjoy a relaxed beach lifestyle, while also being able to work from home if they want.

contemporary coastal living

Perched above Sunrise Beach, Banksia House is an excellent example of coastal architecture that harmonises with its natural surroundings. This contemporary beachside residence balances elegance and sustainability, offering ocean views while maintaining a sense of grounded intimacy.

The brief was for a house, where they could relax, entertain, and delight in the views of the coastal rainforest and ocean.
house needed to be built on a steep site and not exceed the maximum building height.

The home’s design embraces the unique contours of the site, integrating natural materials and a restrained palette that reflects the surrounding coastal landscape. Expansive glazing captures the ever changing light and sea breeze, blurring the boundary between indoors and out. Passive design principles, including cross-ventilation, deep eaves, and strategic orientation, ensure year-round comfort and energy efficiency.

We designed the living areas and main
bedroom to look out over the garden to the ocean.
The pool deck is out of the wind with good sun, so it is warm all year round.

From the sun-drenched living spaces to the secluded upper-level retreat, each element of the Banksia House has been carefully considered to create a home that is both functional and serene. The result is a refined coastal sanctuary that exemplifies thoughtful, site-responsive design.

To manage the steep slope, we designed
a series of terraced gardens and outdoor
entertaining areas that step down from the inside.
Flat outdoor entertaining areas
allow our clients to enjoy the subtropical
climate and coastal rainforest outlook
